If you’re looking for a rural hideaway for a family home, small business or even a retreat, you need to take a look at this unique and charmingly quirky farmhouse! Set in a quiet, rural location, it lives up to its name, yet has all the necessary day-to-day amenities just 5 minutes’ drive away in the village of Las Palas, with the town of Fuente Álamo 10 minutes away. And if you’re looking for beaches, only 20 minutes away you’ll find some of the best blue flag beaches in the region.

This is a traditional Spanish country house, restored to maintain its original character and features whilst at the same time offering all that a modern home requires. Typically of such properties, its layout reflects the changing use of the building over the generations, creating an almost labyrinthine arrangement that offers huge potential for a variety of purposes.

Step through the front gate between the oleander bushes, and you’ll find yourself on a long south-facing patio where you can enjoy the Mediterranean sunshine for over 300 days of the year. The front door opens into a large square reception hall, to either side of which are two well-proportioned bedrooms, each with windows to the front. Imagine waking up each morning to views over open countryside towards the mountains! High ceilings with traditional wooden beams and little nooks and cubby holes built into the half-metre thick walls are typical of the features throughout this singular property.

The hall opens through an archway into the spacious lounge-diner, used as a day room by previous occupants. This room has a cosy free-standing log burner and plenty of space for a large dining table and chairs to one side, and a relaxed seating area with sofas to the other. Whilst it naturally forms the hub of the home, this is by no means the only ‘family’ space, as we will see shortly.

First though, at the end of the lounge is access to a large bathroom, with both a sunken bath and a walk-in shower with glass-brick screen. Fitted with a vanity unit and heated towel rail, this space is both relaxing and practical.

Returning to the day room and moving through the doorway, you come to a rather intriguing second sitting room, which has a raised stage area at the back of the room. With its own log burner as well as a separate exit onto the front patio, this room is a perfect place to relax at the end of the day at any time of year, whether it be enjoying the sounds of the countryside drifting through the open door in the cool of the summer evenings, or getting cosy around the log burner on the longer winter nights.

Behind the stage area is a corridor which leads you past the garage/workshop and on to a self-contained annex comprising a sitting room, shower room and a large mezzanine bedroom. There are signs of the original function of these rooms in the wooden hanging poles and metal fixing rings still attached within the walls. Even the shower room has a couple of these rather unusual towel hooks…certainly a talking point! The bedroom is large enough to provide family accommodation, making the annex ideal for a guest suite or even giving you the potential to offer B and B to travellers looking for a taste of traditional rural Spain.

But we haven’t finished yet. Didn’t we say that the arrangement of this house was almost labyrinthine? Let’s go back to the day room, and through the doorway at the opposite end, where we find a good-sized farmhouse kitchen featuring the original large chimney that would in the past have serviced the cooking fireplace. There is ample space for even the most adventurous of cooks, and even for a smaller dining table if you prefer more informal family meals in the midst of all the cooking action. A solid traditional wooden door leads out onto a walled patio area with log store, space for tools and implements, and a garden door out to the lane behind the house.

From the kitchen, a corridor takes you to another bedroom to the rear of the house. This room would also lend itself to a therapy room, study, or craft room. A narrow staircase leads up to a further bedroom or office, but remember to DUCK when you come back down the stairs! Under the stairs is a toilet, and finally, at the front end of the corridor, is the last room of the house. With plentiful natural light, this makes an ideal workroom or art studio. This room leads out to a large private courtyard which offers plenty of outside space for al fresco dining or escaping the summer heat in its shaded confines.

Just in case you still need more space, across the lane, there is approximately 1.800m2 of undeveloped land, offering potential for any number of ideas, whether you want to plant an orchard or grow your own vegetables (Murcian soil is famously fertile), create a private garden, with or without a pool, or install a cabin for holiday rentals, to offer rustic retreats or even as additional family accommodation.

With the wonderful beaches of the Costa Cálida, the historic cities of Cartagena and Murcia, and the stunning Sierra Espuña national park all within a short drive, you would be hard-pressed to find a more inviting location.
